The Search Bar

The Search bar can be found in the top right-hand corner of every page of the site. If you are viewing the content of a book, two radio buttons below the bar can be used to specify whether you wish to search only within the book you are viewing or across all books.

Type or paste your search terms in the bar and then press the Enter key or click GO to start searching.

Search Results

Search Results pages are reached via the Search bar or the Advanced Search page. They allow further refinement of results and browsing of result summaries.

Search Results pages include four panes with the following headings:

The Search Results pane

The main pane on Search Results pages displays a list of chapters and entries that match your search criteria, in descending order according to the degree of correspondence. If you refine the results by choosing topics (see below), the list is revised to match your selections.

Each item in the results list includes:

  • The chapter title.
  • An excerpt of text from the start of the chapter.
  • The author(s) of the chapter.
  • The title of the book in which the chapter appears (which links to the Title Information page for that book).

To view the full text of a chapter, click on the chapter title.

Browse search results

The results list is divided into pages, each of which contains ten results.

To browse the list, use the navigational links at the top or bottom of the Search Results pane, on the right-hand side. Click the number of the page you wish to view, or select NEXT or PREVIOUS.

When the full text of a chapter found by a search is viewed, adjacent results can be browsed without returning to the results summary page, using the Next result and Previous result links on the left-hand side of the page.

Instances of your search terms are highlighted in the text of found chapters.

Search term

The Search term pane shows the terms that you entered to produce the initial list of search results and the total number of matching results found. The number of results will be revised to reflect any search refinements made (see below).

Choose your topics

This feature allows you to refine the results of a search by topic if too many results were found initially.

The Choose your topics pane, on the left-hand side of the page, lists topics that are related to the results of your search, grouped under the headings Subject, Place, Period, People and Key Topics. The figures in parentheses indicate the number of results found for each topic.

Symbol to the left of a topic indicates that it has sub-topics that can be displayed by clicking the box. Click the symbol next to a topic to hide its sub-topics.

Symbol next to a topic indicates that it has no sub-topics.

To restrict your search results to a particular topic, click the » link next to that topic. Continue choosing further topics until the number of search results that remain is satisfactory.

Choose People or Key Topics

If the list of people or key topics relevant to your search results is too long to appear in the left-hand column, a Please Select ... instruction will be displayed. Click » to display a full list of people or topics in the main body of the page, grouped alphabetically. Select a person or key topic from the list to return to the normal Search Results view, where you will be able to choose additional topics or browse results.

Your chosen topics

A pane in the left-hand column provides a running summary of the topics you have chosen to refine your search results. Initially the pane displays No Selections.

If you wish to remove a previously chosen topic from the selection, click the « button to the right of the topic.

If you wish to remove all previously chosen topics (i.e. return to the initial full set of search results), click Clear All Selections.
