Dionne Brand, who came to prominence as an award-winning poet, is also a celebrated novelist, scholar, and activist. One of the major threads that bind Brand's creative writings is that of space. By infusing the dynamics of space – the physical, geographical, sexual, political, ephemeral, and spiritual – into her representations of the human condition, Brand's poetry and fiction offer an unflinching exploration of the disparate Caribbean diasporic experience. Dionne Brand was born in Guayaguayare, Trinidad and Tobago on January 7, 1953. At the age of 17, having graduated from high school, Brand migrated to Canada in order to further her education. At the University of Toronto, she earned a Bachelor of Arts in English and Philosophy in 1975 and a Master of Arts in Philosophy of Education in 1989. Brand's first collection of poetry, Fore Day Morning: Poems , was published in 1978, followed by nine additional collections, four novels, and seven works of nonfiction. Moreover, she has contributed to nearly twenty anthologies, made several documentary films, and published numerous essays. Brand's poetry collection Land to Light On (1997) received Canada's Governor General's Award for Poetry as well as the Trillium Book Award. Her other collections No Language Is Neutral (1990) and Inventory (2006) were both nominated for the Governor General's Award.
